Grandparents are Grand

We are very fortunate that Campbell knows both our parents and they really love her and make a point to spend time with her as they can. My parents, "Honey" & "Papa", live in Troy so of course they get to see her more often and I don't know what I'd do without having them as my backup babysitters. But they are so much more! They each have special moments with Campbell and she knows what those certain things are. Like crawling up in Papa's lap to read a book or playing "where is it?" games with Honey.

Reading a book with Honey on Christmas Eve

Campbell is very comfortable in their house and cruises the floor plan like she's lived there for years. She even has her own drawer in the kitchen which is on the bottom so she can easily get into it and find all kind of "snax" as she says. We have dinner at Papa & Honey's most every Sun. and Wed. night with my brothers, Newton & Christopher, a close cousin, Troy, and whatever friends they may bring to the table.

Matt's parents live in Birmingham which is a bit further away but close enough for a weekend stay about every 30-60 days. They came to Troy this past weekend and Campbell got so excited to see her "Clairey" and "Papa Q". For the first hour, she just ran in circles around them, laughing and making funny faces. Of course, her daddy & I (in the same first hour) are trying to get her to say all her new words and perform the latest tricks since she saw them last. Which, as all mothers know, NEVER works when you want it to. The kid just stares at you or their audience and tightens up.

My in-laws are younger than the typical grandparents and while I'm sure they will tell their friends that their favorite part of visiting us was seeing their granddaughter, Matt & I know the truth. They found Wii. Yes, we are the proud owners of the Nintendo Wii. Yes, we are (almost) thirty-somethings with no teenagers. And just for the heck of it, Matt came home with the Wii this past summer. I convinced myself it was okay to have in the house because its really exercise. And good marriage therapy if you consider the boxing game. Anyway, Matt's parents had heard all the rage about the Wii and how crazy people were over Christmas trying to get one. (If you are one of those people-i know you are hating us now. We have one we hardly use and bought just
because the day was particularly sunny or something. And that was one less Wii on the store shelves in December for you to fight over-sorry! :). Okay, back to the story. So Campbell is asleep and Clairey is standing in the middle of our den with her fur jacket on, holding her Wii controller and trying to learn how to bowl. Yes, a bowling tournament followed and kept us all up and this morning Clairey and Papa Q are back at it again. Not the typical grandparents at all but they sure do make life fun!

On Saturday, I took both my mother and my mother-in-law to the Storytelling Festival which is a local event. There were 4 "famous" storytellers that got on stage and well, told stories. It was humorous and touching and of course reminded me of the stories my parents have told me about both their lives growing up and my pre-memory days. I know that it will be important to pass on those stories to Campbell and preserve all her own stories so that we will forever live and be known to our descendants.

Which is I guess what all this blogging business is about after all. Sharing our stories. Katherine Tucker Windham (one of the featured storytellers, yes-the 13 Alabama Ghosts writer) was right. She says that we all have memories. Stories to tell. We all have a storyteller inside.

Fashionably Late...

Although I do pride myself on being with the latest trends, I am a latecomer to the blog scene. Its been lots of fun to read my friends' blogs and now that I am almost 30...yikes! It is probably time I graduated from myspace to blogger.. So here I am. Meet the Bakers:

Unlike most of my blogger friends, I am not a stay at home mom. I work for a recycling company and travel a lot speaking about sustainability and recycling. And from my small experience with maternity leave, sick days and extended holidays, I know God had given SAHMs a special gift so I totally admire & respect all of those mothers (including my own) who work every day with no pay check or lunch break! I also spend my extra(?!)time volunteering for the local cultural arts and other community organizations. After my fair share of time in the big city, I really have fallen in love with small town living and have fun working hard so that our families can play hard.

I'm sure there will be many stories of my volunteer action escapades to come!

My husband, Matt, is an attorney by day and by night is our family chef and sports expert. We are approaching our 5th anniversary and have been blessed with a happy, healthy, beautiful baby girl, Campbell

Daddy & Daughter at a Christmas party in Birmingham.
She gets her pretty blue eyes from her daddy!

She's 18 months now and has such the little personality! I'm sure you'll see lots of Campbell blogs from me! She truly has brought a sparkle and warmth into our home and has made us all fall head over heels. But I'm sure that is what every parent says too! It's been so fun to see her grow and learn so much. It goes by so fast!! It seems every day she is doing something new and I continue to have a fear that I might forget one day from the next with her-all her little cute things that make our days and nights go by. So, yes, much of this blog experience will be dedicated to my baby girl!

And of course I can't forget our first child, Chloe. Chloe is a Samoyed and kept me company when I was recovering from a tonsillectomy almost 3 years ago. While I could say that she adds something to our home too...well, its more like white fluff and chaos, but she loves & protects Campbell and they have a very special bond!

So, here I go into the blog world. I am not just doing this to show off my family or keep everyone updated on the most recent pictures but I am really doing this because I regret not journaling (especially about my daughter) more. So this will be a record of our lives, as mundane as they may seem at times. I am looking forward to looking back and remembering all the little things that truly make our lives ours.
